What is Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is a counselling/communication style originally developed
within the field of substance misuse by Dr Bill Miller and Professor Steve Rollnick.
The predominant model for working with substance use and behaviour change in the United
States in the 70’s and 80’s had been a relatively confrontational and directive behavioural
approach.
Motivational Interviewing was borne out of an attempt to find a more non-confrontational
way of motivating and working with people to help them to make positive changes in their
lives. It draws on other counselling and psychotherapy models notably person centred
counselling and solution focussed brief therapy ideas and provides an integrated philosophy
and framework for concrete communication and motivational skills.
A broad base of research evidence now supports the efficacy of this approach and it is
now used in a variety of settings where motivation and the changing of a behaviour or
behaviours are relevant such as mental health, criminal offending, primary health care and
education.
